What to Expect

Interested in creating a glass piece inspired by graffiti art?  While graffiti is a great form of expression, try it out on a canvas of glass rather than the side of a building!   Join Lisa Becker at D&L Art Glass to discover the possibilities of using a spray gun to apply fusible paints onto sheet glass.  In this two day class, students will test out new and exciting techniques before designing a 5x5” and 10x10” project.  Students will explore the possibilities of layering paints and textures to create a colorful and active panel.  Surface embellishment methods will then be investigated and added to the panels to complete a multidimensional piece of glass. What to Expect

Building on skills learned from working with powdered glass, students will create a piece with embedded imagery. Techniques explored will include stenciling, masking, sgraffito, and mark masking through various tools and processes. Students will make a variety of custom sheet glass and then cut and build the glass into a thicker piece of work.  Paper-Thin Pate de Verre with Saman Kalantari

What to Bring:                  N95 dust mask or respirator, cutting tools (razor blade, scissors, designer knife), several sized paint brushes (from ½” to 2 ½”), sifters for powder and fine frit, notepad & pen.

 

 

What to Expect

There are many different ways to make pâte de verre objects.   Depending on the work one wants to make, the process can

take quite a long time.  In this four day class with international artist Saman Kalantari, learn a new, simple approach to pâte de verre that yields thin-walled glass pieces in a short amount of time.  Using sand as a molding material, various colors, textures and forms of paper-thin glass can be created.  Learn to work in a neat and accurate way while using materials that can be used again.  Learn how to produce glass frits and powder and how to use a sandblaster for finishing work.  Daily objectives and test projects will build students towards a final, sculptural project. 90 COE glass is used in this class.  The techniques explored in this class are applicable to either 90 COE or System 96 glass.

This intensive hands-on class will explore the possibilities of using clay to create objects to be cast in glass. In this workshop, Mark Abildgaard will guide participants through his entire creative process from clay sculpting, forming plaster/silica molds, to fully  understanding  glass casting techniques and  firing schedules.  In-depth discussion of mold mixes and mold making techniques, as well as firing and annealing schedules will also take place during Abildgaard’s workshop. Students will create 2 to 3 glass pieces during this exciting 3-day workshop & leave with the know-how to create one-of-a-kind cast glass art.

What to Expect

Join D&L and Anne Nye for a hands-on course with an emphasis on the artistic possibilities of creating scenes with her new palette knife method. This workshop is perfect for traditional watercolor or acrylic painters who would like to try their hand at glass, as well as accomplished glass artists.

Students will be guided through the process of “palette knife glass” while creating studies of different landscape elements such as clouds, trees, water, and more. Techniques learned through these small studies can then be applied to their own compositions. Participants will learn how to develop sketches from photos for successful frit paintings and also learn which photos work best. Compositional basics such as color balance, shading/contouring, and value will all be discussed and implemented during this workshop.

Participants will be lead through a series of experiments with color, creating thumbnails that will serve as smaller studies, aiding in the creation of the final pieces. The sample tiles created in this workshop will serve as a valuable reference tool for future projects. On the final day of the workshop, Anne and participants will critique and troubleshoot any issues that occurred during the pieces’ firing, as well as learn how to apply the palette knife technique to “painting” flowers in glass.

Join Richard La Londe and D&L Art Glass Supply for an intensive one day workshop which will cover fusing float glass,

 otherwise known as window glass, and combining it with numerous materials to create a two-sided dimensional mask.

Vitreous enamels, silver, and other metal foils will be intro­duced to float glass to create a complex and unique mask, which will then be fused and slumped using a fiber blanket mold. During this workshop, participants will learn to distin­guish the different sides of float glass from one another, how to create reactions with mixed metals, and how to put an end to devitrification, helping to enhance future pieces.  Metal stands will also be created in order to display participants’ finished masks.

This is an amazing opportunity to study with a pioneer in glass fusing. La Londe will guide students through the entire creative process, including design techniques, the liquid glass line method, multi-layer work, silver foil, multiple firings and more. The Modern Murrini with Jim Weiler

Special Instructions:       Basic glass cutting experience is preferred.  The instructor and staff will handle all hot shop techniques with design input from the student.  Students applying for enrollment with hot shop experience may participate in hot glass techniques at the discretion and direction of the instructor and D&L staff members.

What to Expect

Utilize modern equipment and kilnforming techniques in this NEW class with Jim Weiler.  This class will take students through the process of designing and executing the ancient technique of glass murrini.  Students will compose and fuse compatible colored sheet glass into blocks that the instructor and staff will pick up, manipulate, and stretch using a hot shop glory hole.

The final delicate murrini patterns will be exposed once the canes are cut into their cross sections.  Students will exploreoptions for composition with the resulting parts while picking up valuable skills and tricks to understanding the fusing process.  There will be a precise balance between the studio dance of the hot shop, the introspection and deliberate approach found in the kiln shop, and the dedication and discipline needed in the cold shop.  Students will create two plates in class and have lots of leftover murrini for later projects.
